AUSTRALIA has a new Queen of Speed, drag racer Kelly Bettes, and she is set for a royal tour of the Northern Territory next month. Bettes claimed the prized crown in Brisbane yesterday when she recorded the quickest and fastest runs by a woman driver in this country. Program De Facut Invitatii De Nunta Gratis. She reached a whopping 526 kilometres per hour (326 miles per hour) at the finish line, becoming the first woman to break 500 km/h in Australia. “The cars are so fast to drive it’s difficult to describe,” she said. “The car launches so hard when you open the throttle that it hits 5Gs immediately and you’ve got tunnel vision. “At half track it’s travelling at over 430 km/h and it just keeps on pulling all the way to the finish line. When the parachutes come out and you apply the brakes it’s negative 5Gs, so it throws you around. “It’s hard explain what you feel other than it is just mind blowing.” Bettes completed her Top Fuel Dragster licence runs at Willowbank Raceway.

Source: Supplied In claiming the Queen of Speed crown, Bettes dethroned her idol Rachelle Splatt, who was the first woman to break 300 mph while racing in the United States in 1994. Splatt recently made a comeback and had hoped to be the first Australian woman to break 500 km/h on home soil, but car issues have restricted her in her two race appearances to date. Bettes has raced for 22 years, first in the Junior Dragster category where she won a national championship as a 13-year-old in 1998. She claimed the senior Modified dragster championship in 2010.
Her previous best time was 7.00 seconds, with a top speed of 313 km/h. Bettes was selected by team owner Phil Lamattina to replace him as driver of the Lamattina family’s Top Fuel dragster.
She will make her competition debut in Top Fuel at Hidden Valley’s 400 Thunder Nitro Up North meeting on 21/22 July. “I’ve been thinking about Hidden Valley throughout the whole licensing process and I am really excited about racing in Darwin,” Bettes said.
“I’ve heard the people are great, the track is one of the smoothest in the country, and I’m told the whole event is just awesome, so I am really looking forward to it.” After Hidden Valley, Bettes’ royal tour will make a special appearance at Alice Springs Inland Dragway the following weekend for the Desert Nationals.

If we had a free minute from homework or chores around the house (or in the race shop), there was one place we could always be found: gathered around the computer trying to beat each other’s lap times. In the early 2000’s, my brother Garrett got the first licensed dirt racing game for pc, called “Dirt Track Racing,” for Christmas, and the obsession began. After my two brothers and I mastered this game, we moved onto more realistic games with more life-like steering wheel and pedal configurations, even to the point where we were using an old racing seat for our chair and had our race car’s removable steering wheel zip-tied to the computer steering wheel. (OK, obsessed may be a bit of an understatement.) My brothers and I have a short list of racing games that we consider to be good-quality dirt racing simulators, and almost all of them share the same quality; they were made before 2004. In fact, the game we used most when practicing for real racing was actually a NASCAR game called NASCAR Racing 2003 Season.
